I first heard about the sky running team through a friend who had gone with the team in 2018. Ever since I heard about it I have been hooked on wanting to go myself. So when I heard that there was a possibility, I jumped on the occasion. I am super excited to represent my country this year in Italy and I can’t wait to go push my limits internationally. This experience will be one I don’t forget!

Finn Tower-PierceWhen I was 9 years old, I saw a video on YouTube about a 14 year old kid who was really good at computer programming. It made me really upset because I didn't think I could ever get that good at programming, but it also motivated me at the same time. I was told that I just needed to keep learning as much as I could and to be persistent on my goal. Fast forward to when I turned 14, I was pretty certain that I knew more about programming than that kid at his age. Over those years I was determined. I use this approach to my running too. And it sort of applies to everything I do.

I began trail running as a way to cross-train for nordic skiing, which I grew up doing. As I began to immerse myself into trail running and skyrunning I began to notice how different the community was from many of the other outdoor activities I had done. It was less cut-throat and competitive and ableistic. Once I entered this community, I jumped all into skyrunning. I have been skyrunning for 4 years now, mostly in Salt Lake City. I now go to college in Northern New York studying performance nutirition and how it crosses with sustainability and other social issues. I am learning how to navigate and train in a completely different environment in New York. I am glad to have this opportunity to further expand inclusivity in skyrunning and the outdoor world!

During the summer in high school I was lucky enough to have the chance to race some VKs and skyraces and that got me hooked. I was even able to score enough points to take 3rd and make the podium in 2016 for the North American Skyrunner VK circuit. After a two year pause to serve a mission for my church, I came back and was told by a few podiatrists that I had fractured my sesamoids and wouldn’t be able to ever run competitively again. I‘m not saying you shouldn’t listen to your doctors, but make sure you listen to the right ones. I had my XC coach (who also happened to be a podiatrist) check me out and he told me „as long as it doesn’t cause you too much pain, you can keep competing! Go for it!“, so I took that advice and ran with it. After a couple years of training alone and through lockdown in Germany, I was able to get some new PRs in the books and return to the mountains! Now I’m back in the game and ready to give it my all on the Mountain trails of Gran Sasso for the USA!

I've found that running in the mountains has a lot in common with everyday life off and out of the mountains. The obstacles you must navigate, challenges you must face, the red zones, the confidence you need to gain, being comfortable with being alone, and how everything eventually falls into place and makes sense. The only difference is that there is no paperwork to deal with in the mountains. #adulting"

I started running XC/Track as a sophomore in high school, and fell into mountain and sky running as a way to spend more time in the mountains than running 400m circles. I grew up rock climbing, so skyrunning is a nice middle ground! Getting to compete in an international field on some of the best running terrain out there is a dream come true. In the meantime, I'm training hard and getting psyched for July 30!
