YOUTH SKYRUNNING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

August 4-6, 2023 – Gran Sasso, Abruzzo, Italy

The seventh edition of the annual Youth Skyrunning World Championships will take place for the fifth time in L’Aquila, Italy with the Gran Sasso Vertical Kilometer® on August 4 and the Gran Sasso SkyRace® on August 6, 2023.

Four categories are contested: Youth A (15-16), Youth B (17-18), Youth C (19-20) and U23 (21-23) will compete in the VERTICAL and SKY disciplines for the 75 medals at stake and individual and combined titles.

August 4 – VERTICAL – 3.8 km long with 1,033m vertical climb 

August 6 – SKY – 23 km long with 2,226m vertical climb

August 6 – SKY YOUTH A & B – 10 km long with 1,100m vertical climb

Age categories

The official 2023 Youth Skyrunning World Championships categories are four:

  • Youth A (15-16 years): born from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008
  • Youth B (17-18 years): born from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2006
  • Youth C (19-20 years): born from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2004
  • U23 (21-22-23 years): born from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2002

Regulations

  • All those wishing to participate in the Youth Skyrunning World Championships must be selected by their National Member
  • Every National Member can select a maximum of six participants for every category, with a maximum of 18 participants per team
  • Teams can present up to 6 athletes per age category, with maximum four athletes of the same gender. Possible maximum distributions are: 4M+2W or 3M+3W or 2M+4W
  • Organisers must host for every official country represented, a minimum of four athletes and one team manager (accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner), from evening the day before the first race (VERTICAL) to morning of the day after the last race (SKY) for a total of four nights from Thursday evening to Monday morning

Details

  1. The seventh edition of the Youth Skyrunning World Championships will be held in Italy, on August 4-6, 2023 at Fonte Cerreto, L’Aquila, Abruzzo.
  2. National teams must communicate their official participation and the number of athletes divided by category by May 1, 2023.
  3. National teams must communicate the names of the athletes by June 30, 2022.
  4. Teams must arrive the day before the first race (VERTICAL) and stay until the day after the last race (SKY), from Thursday evening to Monday morning (minimum 4 nights).
  5. The VERTICAL will be held on Friday morning, August 4, with an individual start at least every 20 seconds. Every category will be separated by a minimum time interval of five minutes, starting from A, B, C and U23 Women, and A, B, C and U23 Men.
  6. The SKY race will be held on Sunday morning, August 6, with a mass start. The YWC SKY race will be separated by at least 30 minutes from other eventual open races on the same course.
  7. Medals (gold, silver and bronze) will be awarded to women and men for the VERTICAL and SKY titles and Combined title (based on the sum of VERTICAL + SKY) and for the overall Team Ranking (based on the individual points accrued by the top four athletes – at least one per gender – in each age category in each discipline).
  8. The SKY distance will be around 10 km for Youth A and B category  and around 20 km for Youth C and U23 categories.
  9. Other information regarding opening and closing ceremonies, doping controls, pasta parties and all the other activities will be communicated at a later date.

FISky, the ISF member for Italy, will sanction the events and oversee them with their referees. WADA anti-doping tests will be carried out at the Championships.
